In the period before World War I, countries in Europe began to ally in order to ensure protection in case of war and prevent conflict. This Alliance system was started by Chancellor Bismarck of Germany. The Triple Entente, otherwise known as the Allies, included Russia, Great Britain, and France. The Triple Alliance, also referred to as the Axis or Central Powers, was originally made up of Germany, Italy, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Italy was soon replaced by the Ottoman Empire and joined the Allies once the war began.
